2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased gamesโ€”Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hopsโ€”prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming looks particularly powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even startedโ€”and the possibility for moreโ€”the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games find successโ€”and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeedโ€”we might just be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
